A computational approach is described for helping jazz improvisors create solos. Initial facets of the approach have been embodied in a freely-available software tool called Impro-Visor (”Improvisation Advisor”) which we developed. The paper describes the rationale and some of the computational challenges and issues associated with designing and implementing such a tool.
